How do children learn, and how do they manage to quickly and efficiently acquire knowledge about the world? The iSearch research group at the Technical University of Munich is exploring these questions — including at Zoo Berlin — by studying how children actively seek out information in their physical and social environment. Young zoo visitors can spontaneously take part in exciting experiments.

Berlin has a long and successful tradition of keeping giraffes. In fact, an impressive building was constructed specifically for these exotic rarities back in 1872 — a structure that still stands today as a landmark of Berlin’s Zoological Garden. The housing association HOWOGE has been a long-time sponsor, supporting the care of this endangered species.

Thanks to the close collaboration between Zoo Berlin and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, panda mother Meng Meng has once again given birth to twins. Through artificial insemination led by Prof. Dr. Hildebrandt, the reproduction of giant pandas has been successfully supported for the second time — a milestone that highlights the expertise and strong partnership of both institutions in the field of species conservation.

The Zoo School at Zoo Berlin is the ideal extracurricular learning environment, inspiring children and young people to explore the world of animals and nature through play. With a wide range of programs – from age-appropriate tours for preschoolers to in-depth science education – the Zoo School fosters a deeper understanding of the fascinating creatures that inhabit our planet. Berliner Sparkasse supports this valuable educational initiative through traditional sponsorship, actively helping to raise awareness for species conservation among young people.

The research group is present on site with a mobile research station, and young Zoo and Aquarium visitors are welcome to pop in and participate in exciting experiments.
