Highlight for kids – the koi petting basin
Zoo-Aquarium has a lot to offer when it comes to theme events and attractions. A quite special highlight for kids is just behind the ticket office – the petting basin with the popular Japanese koi.
Nishikigoi, or “brocaded carp”, are Japanese ornamental fish that can look back on centuries of breeding tradition. Their common ancestor is the Caspian wild carp, which has also given rise to the commercial mirror and leather carp varieties.
Today, too, koi are regarded as a status symbol not only in Japan, but in many other places: large specimens with particular colour patterns have fetched up to €100,000 at auctions.
Here in Germany koi have won the hearts of many fish lovers. Fan clubs followed, which very soon paved the way for registered organisations focusing exclusively on koi.
At Zoo-Aquarium Japanese koi enjoy very special popularity with our younger visitors. Accordingly, an unfailing highlight of every child’s birthday party at Zoo-Aquarium is when these beautiful fish take their food out of children’s hands. It is astonishing how friendly and yet active these fish can get when there's something tasty to eat.
